How to use this calculator

  1. 1

Enter the start and end times. Use the time pickers or type them.

  2. 2

Add days if needed. Leave it at 0 for same-day or overnight ranges. Enter 1 or more when the end is on a later day.

  3. 3

Subtract a break. Enter unpaid break minutes to get the net time worked.

Example

10:00 PM to 6:30 AM is an overnight range of 8 h 30 min (8.5 decimal hours).

9:00 AM to 5:30 PM with a 30-minute break is 8 h 00 min net.

How it is calculated

Start and end are converted to minutes after midnight and subtracted. If the end is earlier than the start and “days later” is 0, the range is treated as overnight and one day is added. Identical times give 0 minutes, not 24 hours: enter 1 in “days later” for a full day.

With 1 or more days later, the days are added to the end time exactly as entered, so 9:00 AM to 9:00 AM two days later is 48 hours.

Decimal hours divide the minutes by 60 and round to two places, the format most timesheets and payroll systems expect. Results are clock arithmetic: they do not know about daylight saving changes.

Questions

Does this handle daylight saving changes?

No. It treats every day as 24 hours. If a clock change falls inside your range, convert both ends with the Time Zone Converter and compare them.
